How to spend your art weekend

Berlin’s best art openings and events for the weekend (May 8th – 11th 2013): we have tickets for you to a one night only show in a secret location

Festival / Stupid Music at HKW

Thursday 8th May – 8pm

It’s often assumed that a lot can be deducted about an individual’s personality when looking at their music collection. Then again, it’s often the case that a person’s taste doesn’t slot neatly into one box and that sometimes, even a whole nation (those with discerning taste and all) can be afflicted with the catchiest of ohrwurms, something which ‚Stupid Music‘, the third part of a festival trilogy on music, will explore. Including talks, lectures, performances and projections this three day festival will celebrate all music which is ’stupid‘, those catchy tunes which we love to hate (but secretly quite like).

Vernissage/ Group Show ‚Pandamonium: Media Art From Shanghai‘

Friday 9th May – 7pm until 10pm

‚Pandamonium: Media Art From Shanghai‘ is a group show exhibiting the works of the three first generations of media artists in China, a topic which has barely been touched in the contemporary art scene. Featuring mainly single screen projections the exhibiton will include work primarily from Shanghai based artists but also two artists based in Berlin exploring the same theme of technology and new asthetics in Chinese art. There will also be an audiovisual installation and perfromance next door at the Momentum Gallery on the same evening as part of the Kongress der Artikulation which you can find out about here.

Vernissage/ Susanne Schirdewahn at Haus am Lützowplatz

Friday 9th May – 7pm

‚Darf ich Sie zeichnen?‘, translated roughly to ‚Session. May I draw?‘ is an interesting set of portrait interviews produced by Berlin based writer and visual artist Susanne Schirdewahn. Unveiled at Haus am Lützowplatz this Friday, the paintings were created during hour long sitting sessions when the artist questionned subjects, painting them as they responded, the conversations full of vigour and movement which is clearly reflected in the rich textural qualities and vivid brush strokes of the pieces.

If previous shows are anything to go by you can expect an eclectic mix of thoughtful reflection, tongue in cheek risque perfromances and a huge dollop of fun. Admittance is by rsvp only and although the guest list is now closed there are 5 spots up for grabs for ArtBerlin readers.
