Openings, Events, Parties in Berlin

Berlin’s top openings and art events for the weekend (Dec 12th– 14th 2013): K.O. Götz at Neue Nationalgalerie, Kurt Kocherscheidt at CFA, Berlin Film Society

Screening / Der Kultur Club Presents: The Actual Ping Pong of the Abyss

Thursday 12th December – 8pm

Cosy Neukölln cafe Tischendorf is known not only for its delicious cakes and unusual, upturned hanging plant pots but also its monthly Culture Club event. Covering a whole host of interesting individuals, this month focuses on poet, playwright and amateur percussionist Antonin Artaud with the playing of one of his radio shows from 1947. Broadcast only once before being pulled off air, it was discovered by Allen Ginsberg some twenty years later and has become a seminal piece of art, influencing many more contemporary creatives.

Vernissage / K.O. Götz at Neue Nationalgalerie

Thursday 12th December – 6pm

February 2014 will mark the 100th Birthday of German painter Karl Otto Götz, and to celebrate Neue Nationalgalerie is staging a major exhibition of around 60 of his works. Spanning an impressive eight decades, Götz’s work is characterised by colourful abstraction and swirling, exploding shape and form. The show will include not only Götz’s well known, earlier ‚air pump watercolours‘ but also later, more dynamic pieces and work from the last few years which dabble in abstract collage.

Neue Nationalgalerie // Potsdamer Straße 50, 10785 Berlin

Screening / Lola Montés

Saturday 14th December – 7:30pm

Don’t miss the Berlin Film Society’s last film of the year at legendary Weißensee venue Das ehemalige Stummfilmkino Delphi, or the Delphi, as it is better known. Dubbed ‚Little Hollywood‘ during the 1920s, the venue has seen the likes of German cinema greats such as Marlene Dietrich and Fritz Lang, and this Saturday will house a screening of Lola Montés, the “extravagant last masterpiece” by German director Max Ophüls based on the exuberant life of a 19th century courtesan and showgirl.

Delphi Berlin // Gustav-Adolf-Straße 2, 13086 Berlin

Vernissage / Kurt Kocherscheidt Restrospektive at CFA

Saturday 14th December – 10am until 6pm

Contemporary Fine Arts Berlin will unveil their latest exhibition this Saturday with a retrospective show on German artist Kurt Kocherscheidt. Associated with a surrealist style the artist began his career creating ’scenically fantastic‘ paintings in the seventies, travelling to South America and studying its rich natural beauty. Despite being widely exhibited with a number of international shows and his inclusion in the ninth edition of Documenta, Kocherscheidt’s ouevre went largely unnoticed until after his death, his figurative, abstract painting regarded by many in his time as no longer ‚relevant‘.

CFA Berlin // Am Kupfergraben 10, 10117 Berlin

Market & Pop-up exhibition / Hoopla Charlotte & Friends Christmas Special

Saturday 14th December – noon & Tuesday 17th December – 7pm

Friedrichshain venue Hoopla Charlotte is the place to be in the next few days, starting with a curated Christmas market on Saturday with art, fashion and food organised by VAGE co- founder Vanessa Brazeau. The fun will continue with a pop-up exhibition on Tuesday by our friends at a.muse Berlin, highlighting eight of their favourite, previously featured Berlin based artists. All work on show will be under the price tag of €350, and a.muse will be embracing the Christmas spirit by donating 5% of any sale proceeds to Berlin charity Kältebus, helping the homeless through the winter months.
