Openings, Events, Parties in Berlin

Berlin’s top art events for this weekend (March 6th – 8th 2014): Künstlerhaus Bethanien with Sven Marquardt, Imi Knoebel at Kewenig, Eigen + Art Lab.

Vernissages / Group Show at Künstlerhaus Bethanien

Thursday 6th March – 7 until 10pm

The latest group of artists opening at Künstlerhaus Bethanien features a very special individual, known by many for his door policy etiquette but not so much for his photography. Head doorman at Berghain, Sven Marquardt is actually a rather talented photographer, his latest work unveiled this evening entitled ‚Nachtblende‘, will present portraits of women in East Berlin taken around 1990, and portraits of men taken as part of a collaboration for Hugo Boss in 2013. Other artists presenting their work this evening include Australian video artist Sam Smith and architecturally inspired Donna Ong.

We actually met Sven Marquardt next to Berghain and had a lovely talk with him about his artist career. You find the interview here: Sven Marquardt

Künstlerhaus Bethanien // Kottbusser Straße 10, 10999 Berlin

Vernissage / Katie Armstrong at Eigen + Art Lab

Thursday 6th March – 5 until 9pm

The first solo exhibition in Berlin by New York based artist Katie Armstrong, ‚Dark Spring‘ will present amongst other pieces two new video works by the artist. The video ‚interlude‘ (the trailer for which you can see here, below) was created during Armstrong’s artist-in-residence at Axel Springer’s Plug & Play Accelerator in Berlin, and deals with the relationship we have with technology in our modern day world. Armstrong uses traditional hand drawn animation techniques to create her pieces, scanning them together after the initial drawing and adding sequencing and music.

Eigen + Art Lab // Ehem. Jüdische Mädchenschule, Auguststraße 11–13,10117 Berlin

Vernissage / ‚Inside The Golden Cage‘ by Malte Urbschat

Friday 7th March – 6pm until 9pm

German artist Malte Urbschat will present his latest exhibition, ‚Inside The Golden Cage‘ at ph-projects this Friday. Originally starting his practice developing installations and sculptures from drawings, Urbschat is interested in the border between art and science, as well as themes of mental illness and neurological phenomena.

ph-projects // Potsdamer Str. 81B, 10785 Berlin

Vernissage / Imi Knoebel ‚Rosa Ort‘ at Kewenig

Saturday 8th March – 6 until 9pm

German artist heavyweight Imi Knoebel will present a series of new works entitled ‚Rosa Ort‘ at Kewenig gallery this Saturday. Working on aluminium, Knoebel explores shape and colour in his famous minimalist style, in this exhibition creating a room installation entitled ‚Ort-Rsa‘ as well as a number of paintings focussing on his favoured ’non-colours‘ of black and white.

Kewenig // Brüderstrasse 10, 10178 Berlin

Film Festival / Berlin Feminist Film Week 2014

Saturday 8th March until Thursday 13th March

Are you a feminist? Before answering, ask yourself, do you believe in equal rights for men and women? If the answer is yes, then essentially yes, you are. Even in our modern day society people seem to have a problem with the label, something which the recent destruction of posters promoting the event seems to prove. Starting on Saturday Berlin Feminist Film Week will celebrate women both in front of and behind the camera, with a series of shorts and full length, feature films across a great variety of venues including Babylon and Villa Neukölln. And no, of course you don’t have to be a woman to attend one of the screenings.
