Your art weekend in Berlin

This art weekend (Aug 28th – 31st) is filled with a picknick at an old sanatorium in the countryside. Thomas Hirschhorn at Schinkel Pavillon and a film festival

Talk & Vernissage / Thomas Hirschhorn at Schinkel Pavillon

Thursday 28th August – From 6:30pm

This Thursday Schinkel Pavillon presents the first Berlin based solo show by Swiss artist Thomas Hirschhorn, ‘Höhere Gewalt’. Known for his ephemeral ‘monuments’ made out of a wide variety of materials, his immersive installations have gained popularity over the last 20 years, challenging the boundaries of environmental and installation art. Ahead of the opening the artist will also converse with Prof. Dr. Michael Diers about the show.

Film Festival / Mobile Kino Weekender

Friday 29th August until 31st August

One reason to temporarily escape the hustle bustle of Berlin this weekend is Mobile Kino’s Weekender, a film festival consisting of two nights of outdoor cinema by a lake in the woods. Held at a former GDR summer camp in the Brandenburg countryside, the event will feature a mixture of new releases and cinema classics, as well as live music, camp fires and generally good vibes. Camping spots are available as are a limited number of cabins, and tickets start at just €10!

Vernissage / Fragmentalism at Kaleidoskop Berlin

Friday 29th August – 7pm

In our current age of digital photography manipulated images are pretty much the norm, but when was the last time you saw an image manipulated by hand? Enter British artist Chloe Grove, who works simply with pencil and paper to create manually distorted geometric caricatures. Her upcoming solo exhibition this Friday will include a series of portraits entitled ’how the mighty have fallen’ featuring fractured images of public icons as well as a couple of larger scale drawings.

Day tour / Baustellen-Picknick in the old Sanatorium Beelitz

Sunday 31st August – 12 noon until 7pm

What better way to make the most of the dwindling summer sun than a day trip to Beelitz, the abandoned sanatorium situated just outside of Berlin. A popular destination for urban explorers, the venue will open its doors this Sunday to offer tours of the building as well as an impressive selection of street food from Berlin’s Bite Club. The event is in aid of the transformation of the complex into a centre for creatives, and may be the last chance you’ll get to see the building in its original grand albeit dilapidated state.
