SHIFT PRESENTS: A PERSONAL DIARY OF TWO YOUNG ARTISTS

The exhibition title is a code. „111213“ is a symbol for the last two years of Byron Reza Afshar and Johi von Bruises´s photography – and life in Berlin. If you want, you can look at it as the answer of two artists to Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest. Knowing both artists personally, I am interested to see what they see and maybe to like what they like. Besides this, I agree with the positioning of  the experimental art space SHIFT to support experimental art, specially in Berlin. A city full of ideas, but where just a few can become real.

The art and sound of Byron Reza Afshar

Byron Reza Afshar, a Swiss-American photographer and sound artist currently studying at Neue Schule für Fotografie Berlin, works continuously on two passions: photography and music. As he is basically recording what he sees and likes, there is no fix categorization of his art work. Possibly the best definition is one from a stranger in Berghain:

Your photography is like yourself: funny but with a touch of melancholia at the same time.

Friday night, at the opening of his exhibition at SHIFT, Byron Afshar will reveil this characteristics by not only showing his latest photography but also by performing two short live sets of experimental music pieces from 2007 and 2013. The suitable audible to the visual experience.

Johi von Bruises: Analog nostalgia

Johi von Bruises works strictly with analog photograph to express her nostalgia. The artist studied photography in Berlin and London and decided two years ago to move back to her beloved hometown Berlin. Since this time Johi is working on her own diary shown exploring very personal moments and encounters in this city that makes her pushing the button of her camera. Her work is a catalogue which captures the insight of a originally born Berliner. A phenomena that seems to be rare in this city.
