FILLING GOOD WITH MAGRITTE JACO

An exhibition that features a fun loving example of eclectic works by Marianne Jacquet aka Margritte Jaco? In days which we feel like the rain will never stop, please immerse instead into the quote: „drawing journey of a phantasmagoric minds-cape exhibition filled with silly characters in curious situations“ – sounds good to us!

Marianne Jacquet is a French artist who explores in her trans-media practice the borders of conceptual art, music and performance. She is operating in several music projects under the name of Magritte Jaco, SPAAM or as a member of the dance clash band Plateau Repas in the Berlin club scene since 2007.
Filling Good is her second collaboration with the AKA Studio after the BACK UP and ESC interactive sound installation tribute to the log lady that was featured in Berghain. We talked to her about FILLING GOOD.

What was the motivation, the motor behind this collaboration? `

I found it interesting how tattoo has become a part of our culture with David Shrigley, Guillaume Pilet, Stephane Devidal, Wim Delwoye, and became mainstream in our daily life in a time where nothing is permanent.
I wanted to collaborate with one tattoo artist from the AKA studio who has a unique colour technique. I would do the lines and and she would fill it with colour on people’s skin. Of course during the construction of the exhibition the concept evolved into something else which is the beauty of putting an idea into reality. I am showing a collection of my drawings, prints and non permanent tattoo and it feels good to be invited in one of the most creative international tattoo studio.

If you would describe the essence of this collection of works, what would it be?

Some people do meditation, some do tantra sex, some do drugs to escape/recenter.

Me I need to draw to empty my basket of thoughts.

Most of the drawings are like a mantra, positive thoughts, it is an abstract bestial, poetic puzzle that is not meant to be assemble. You take what you want, what you recall, what amuses you. I like when art remains versatile and do not correspond to one peculiar format from a thought to a performance, a song or a print. When I conceive a sound installation, I am always driven by concepts, references, so it became very necessary to have a free wheel side practice to outburst the thoughts of the day. And sometime at the end of the day, the side practice has more meaning than your over thought conceptual project. Art is a daily infusion of absurdity that makes reality‘ s none-sense more artzy.

How does it relate to berlin and your surroundings here?

In terms of production printing is much more easier in Berlin, there are a lot of great studios you could just pop in and work with, the Vetomat in Friedrichain, the Bethanien in Kreuzberg, SDW in Neukölln, Re Surgo in Mitte. Berlin tends to value the off-sites events a lot so if you make art in a tattoo shop, dance in a bakery and rave in a laundrette you are in the right places. But above all the AKA studio is working more like a gallery or artist-run center, they are curator of tattoo artist and not only ink provider, which is unique and in Berlin lucky us!

Whats next for you?

I will be presenting some art work at the Yo!Sissy festival on the 29th of July in Berlin and in the fall, you will find me at the artist book fair friends with books in Hamburger Bahnhof.
