TWO LEGENDARY GRAPHIC NOVEL ARTISTS FOR BACARDI

To be honest, when I first saw the invitation to write about Bacardí, my alarm clock ran off. It felt too commercial, nothing for ARTberlin. But then I digged into the graphic novel called The Spirit of BACARDÍ and the two hilarious artists that created the story behind the Bacardí family and the Company origins in Cuba and changed my mind. It is far away from just another (boring, sorry) artist collaboration initiated by a brand. BACARDÍ did dare to bring two legendary graphic novel talents together that share a great sense of humor that might not be every brand manager’s business. You see what I mean by risking an eye on the making off video showcasing writer Warren Ellis and artist Michael Allred the creator of super hero Madman, renowned for its retro 1950s pop art style.

THE CUBAN HERITAGE OF THE RUM COMPANY AND ITS FOUNDER FAMILIY

Warren Ellis and artist Michael Allred used drops of BACARDÍ rum added to the inks used to illustrate the novel. This mirrors the tough spirit of the Bacardí family that, since 1862, has faced earthquakes, fire, revolution, prohibition, and exile, none of which could tame their irrepressible spirit.  For more than 150 years, the brand indeed has some stories to tell.

The Spirit of Bacardi

In the The Spirit of BACARDÍ we meet Emilio Bacardí – son of founder Don Facundo Bacardí Massó – and his tireless work for Cuban independence in the late 1800s. Emilio Bacardí was again and again imprisoned and exiled for his belief in an independent Cuba, but persevered, eventually becoming the first freely-elected Mayor of Santiago de Cuba. The story ends with the creation of the original Cuba Libre cocktail in 1900.

To give you a visual door into it, we have Chapter 23 for you. To follow the story you can either hop to the Design Made in Germany who has the previous chapter or Unlike who carries the next chapter or indulge into the full story here: BACARDI.COM/SPIRITOFBACARDI
