Basel 2018

Amanda Coulson and the Homecoming of VOLTA14

It is time for VOLTA14 in Basel, and we have picked Artistic Director Amanda Coulson´s brain about the new and old Location for this years fair, their „VOLTA CARES“ Initiative and of course about the German and International Galleries and their artists represented at VOLTA14. Amanda Coulson is a sharp observer and not afraid of speaking her mind about the challenges and bias a satellite art fair has to deal with on a daily basis. Needless to say, we enjoyed our conversation very much and are looking forward to our visit next week!

Basel 2018

Vartan Avakian. All that is seen and unseen

It comes as no surprise that the artist Vartan Avakian has developed a one can nearly say fixation on the materiality of data. He was born in Byblos the coastal (former) Phoenician city in nowadays Lebanon, that thought of itself as the oldest of all cities, founded by the God El at the beginning of all time. If you combine the ancient history of this nerve centre of time, and then imagine a boy with an artist mind growing up in this environment all his works and his perception of matter fall into place and even seem like a logical product. For his show „All that is seen and unseen“ he is focusing on books in combination with the concept of as Palimpsests.

Guglielmo Castelli at Künstlerhaus Bethanien

As you might know, ARTBerlin has a thing for paintings! So we were fortunate to meet Italian artist Guglielmo Castelli, whose works – and especially the characters in them – carried our minds off to darker, but also more poetical dimensions. We talked with Guglielmo about how studying theatrical scenography influenced him, his inspiration, transgressing the rules and also how his time in Berlin affected on his works.

PROMETHEUS SERIES

Sebastian Schmidt: missiles

Stretching the Guidelines of Glue – Brook Andrew

We met Melbourne based artist Brook Andrew in the midst of his installation at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, with a giant inflatable sculpture coming to life and a lot of diverse artworks on the floor waiting to be put where they belong. But we could not find any sign of pre-exhibition stress in Andrew’s face, instead did we meet a relaxed and inspiring artist, who might also be the only Australian to admit he likes German winter. The topics, Andrew addresses are such as race, memory, consumerism and history – through his art, he visualises forgotten stories and initiates debates on memory and memorialization.
